The staff and volunteers at AWA raised nearly $1,000 to be able to transport Pickles to Florida to go into foster care with me. He has been wonderful since he arrived. We're trying to take things slowly, but Pickles is just so ready to make up for lost time, he's like an Energizer bunny. Please thank everyone at AWA for giving Pickles a third chance to have a happy life. I know he'll make them all proud. Email your thanks to Sarah at
sarahh@awanj.org
Don't hesitate to give to them, either!

My Keeshond, Poketori, could really care less about squirrels - rabbits are his thing. But his partner in crime Billy (Shibu Inu mix) is on a personal vendetta to rid the world of all bushy tailed tree rats. The squirrels somehow know when I am on an important telephone conference call, and will show up to drive Billy into loud, constant hysterical yapping.

USA Today recently had an interesting article about the dog/squirrel relationship:

They've been adopted. The following is from Rosy, their foster mom:

Happily Ever After Home For Tigger & Pooh
Last night I gave the kiddos another bath. Tigger had a meltdown about the dryer but survided. Pooh didn't want his dinner - his voice of protest. But they looked wonderful. My plan was to take pictures this morning but the lady coming to see Emily was an hour late and stayed for two hours so I only had time to load their transition food and get them in the car (not complaining - she was a very nice lady).

We took the 1 1/2 hour ride to Divide, CO in absolute silence. They pair usually gives a protest bark as they go down the road and then settles down but they must have senced that this ride was different. When we got there, a small rain shower started to come down but they still enjoyed the new smells. Their tails were not on their backs but realizing that they didn't understand what this was about, it wasn't unusual. And the six adults watching their every move didn't help. They went to everyone for a pet and a cuddle but the tails were not happy unless they were outside running the yard. They exlpored the yard, the six foot fence, and every inch of the house. They found where their water dish was and took a few licks. They were shown their own couch (not everyone has furniture waiting for their furkids). Not ever having had their own furniture, they didn't relax on it. Give them a few days - it ill be like they have always been allowed on furniture. They eventually sat down and their eyes started getting heavy. We could tell that they would be OK and that this was really the place they needed to be.

They signed the contract with the rescue chair, I handed over their "stuff" and walked out. My mom had tears in her eyes so I couldn't look at her. Everyone hugged and got in their cars, Gary went back to his new additions to his family. Holly had stayed in the yard with her new furkids. As I drove past, I looked over... and saw one of the the most beautiful sights I had seen in a long time. It was like they had always been there. Tigger and Pooh were prancing around with their tails firmly on their back, their heads held high, their ears straight up, grins on their face and twinkles in their eyes. They were home. I wanted to stop and take a picture but the tears were just to close to the surface so I drove away.

Gary and Holly have promised to send pictures and updates. Their daughters will be home in the next month and will reports back their introductions. Their daughters grew up with three keesies so they are excited to meed their new fursibblings.

So... one more family with their new keeshond furbabies and two keeshonds no longer found to be disposable. It's a very good thing.

I am so touched by the bond you have had with Scruffy. You must really miss him. Yesterday, my lovely rescued Keeshond went missing. I am devastated, she looked very similar to your Scruffy. I have done all I can to find her, posters calls, ads, door to door search...we live out in the country and we searched every square inch of pur property roadsides, ditches, And now thunderstorms are forming and I know she was terrified by storms. I understand my Keeshond, she was a homebody who hated being without us. I am puzzled. She wend out side at 1:30 pm and it has been so warm here in Canada, sometimes she likes to sleep on the cool deck of the house. When I woke up at 5am she was nowhere to be foun. I have been searching ever since...all day , from 5am to 10:30pm.
I am heartbroken as she has been gone almost 2 days.
The worst thing is the not knowing what happened.
I enjoyed reading your site , I understand how important a dog can be in our lives (especially a Keeshond!)

The Bratty Chaddie boy is a very finicky eater. At the National, several people were raving about a supplement called ShowStopper. I bought a can while I was there and tried it. Wow! He's eating all his food at every meal. I've had to cut back a little on his food quantity because I don't want any weight issues. LOL Just 1/4 to 1/2 scoop with breakfast and dinner and Chaddie eats the entire bowl.
